Year A
Season after Pentecost
Proper 14 (19)
Matthew 14:22-33
Contextual Background:
Jesus walks on the sea to meet the disciples in a storm. Peter steps out but begins to sink when he fears. Jesus reaches out: “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” The sea, in the Hebrew and other traditions, refer to the chaos of empire. Tiamat, the Babylonian chaos monster, is related to the tehom in Genesis 1.
Within the Jewish Tradition:
God treads upon the waves in Job (9:8) and subdues the sea’s chaos in creation (Genesis 1). The sea symbolized danger and disorder.
The Challenge Then:
The challenge was to trust Jesus’ authority over chaos, and to believe that stepping out in faith, even amid storms, was possible. Jesus was able to be human in an inhuman system, to live in mutuality in the mist of chaos and domination.
The Challenge Now:
We often prefer the safety of the boat — systems, habits, securities — even when they are fragile and when they distort and destroy human life. Jesus calls us into courageous trust that God is with us in the storm and invites us to walk on the waters of chaos in our own time.
Implications for Leaders & Communities:
- Leaders: model vulnerability by stepping out in faith, naming their own fears.
- Communities: support one another when storms threaten to overwhelm.
What I Am Learning:
Faith is not fearlessness but trusting God’s presence amid fear.
The Question I’m Sitting With:
Where is Jesus calling me to step out of the boat, even if the waters look rough?
