Year A
Lent
Fourth Sunday in Lent
Contextual Background:
Jesus heals a man born blind. The healing sparks conflict: religious leaders resist, the man testifies boldly, and Jesus reveals true sight as faith.
Within the Jewish Tradition:
Blindness and sight often symbolized covenant faithfulness. Prophets promised healing of eyes and ears as signs of God’s reign. When this healing takes place, expectations of Jesus as a possible messiah were raised.
The Challenge Then:
The challenge was to see God’s work outside conventional categories. The leaders clung to power; the once-blind man became a courageous witness.
The Challenge Now:
We still cling to systems that preserve control rather than celebrate new sight. True blindness is refusing to see God’s work in unexpected places.
Implications for Leaders & Communities:
- Leaders: confess where we resist God’s surprising work.
- Communities: celebrate testimony from those formerly silenced.
What I Am Learning:
Sight is not about certainty but about openness to God’s work.
The Question I’m Sitting With:
Where might I be blind to God’s healing because it comes from unexpected people or places?
