Year A
Lent
First Sunday in Lent
Contextual Background:
After baptism, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tested. The devil tempts him with bread, spectacle, and power. Jesus resists by trusting God’s word.
Within the Jewish Tradition:
Israel was tested in the wilderness for forty years. Deuteronomy taught that humans live “not by bread alone but by every word from God.” Jesus embodies Israel’s calling by remaining faithful where Israel often failed.
The Challenge Then:
The challenge was to see that Messiahship is not secured by domination or spectacle but by trust in God’s reign. This temptation story offers a view into the constant temptations of the domination culture of the Roman Empire, not just to Jesus, but to the whole society.
The Challenge Now:
We are tested by the same temptations: to define worth by consumption, to seek security through spectacle, to pursue control through domination. Jesus shows another way — fidelity, humility, and trust. We are likewise tempted. Always.
Implications for Leaders & Communities:
- Leaders: name our communal temptations and resist them with scripture and prayer.
- Communities: practice wilderness disciplines of simplicity, prayer, and solidarity.
What I Am Learning:
Wilderness tests reveal who we truly trust. Jesus shows me that God’s word is enough – remember that God’s dabar created the world.
The Question I’m Sitting With:
What wilderness tests reveal my own false trusts — and how can I resist them with God’s word?
