Year A
Easter
Third Sunday of Easter
Luke 24:13-35

Contextual Background:

Two disciples walk in grief. The risen Jesus joins them, interprets scripture, and is revealed in the breaking of bread. Their hearts burn, and they return to share the news.

Within the Jewish Tradition:

Scripture was always read in light of God’s saving acts. Meals were places of covenant encounter and hospitality.

The Challenge Then:

The challenge was to see Jesus present even when unrecognized, and to trust that suffering and resurrection were part of God’s story.

The Challenge Now:

We often fail to recognize Jesus walking with us, especially in grief. Resurrection opens our eyes in scripture, table, and community.

Jesus is walking with us even when we don’t recognize him.

Implications for Leaders & Communities:

  • Leaders: create space for scripture and table to reveal Christ’s presence.
  • Communities: share meals and stories as sacramental spaces, not only within your community be with people of other in-groups.

What I Am Learning:

Christ is often revealed in ordinary hospitality and shared bread.

The Question I’m Sitting With:

How can I become more attentive to Christ’s presence on the road and at the table?
