Year A
Season after Pentecost
Proper 22 (27)
Matthew 21:33-46
Contextual Background:
Jesus tells of a king who invites guests to a wedding banquet. The invited refuse, so the king gathers strangers from the streets. Yet one guest without a wedding garment is cast out.
Within the Jewish Tradition:
The banquet is a prophetic image of God’s reign (Isaiah 25). Covenant renewal was often pictured as a feast of joy.
The Challenge Then:
The challenge was to accept God’s radical invitation, and also to come prepared to live in God’s ways. The garment was symbol of baptism. Matthew seems concerned that some in his community are refusing the daily death and resurrection of the cross.
The Challenge Now:
We often resist God’s invitation — too busy, too self-sufficient. Others accept but neglect transformation. God’s reign is both gift and call.
Implications for Leaders & Communities:
- Leaders: invite widely, but also call people into transformed life.
- Communities: practice discipleship through hospitality. Work for relationship between in-groups in your community. See www.pathstounderstanding.org for some resources to help you. There you will be invited to gather people of diverse traditions, cultures, economic circumstances, life situations, identities, and ages.
What I Am Learning:
God’s invitation is radical grace, but it also transforms us.
The Question I’m Sitting With:
Am I entering God’s banquet with readiness to be clothed in Christ’s ways?
